Audacious Venturing Prize Package

April 14, 2008 by audaciousventures

There is only one thing better than money when you’re starting a new venture, and that’s expertise. You have a great idea, but beyond the idea are strategic, marketing, legal, financial and technical considerations – which aren’t always easy to come by. Which is why the prizes for this year’s Audacious Venturing Student Business Concept Competition are consultation packages from some of the area’s top entrepreneurs and professionals.

The packages will include mentoring time with:

Time with this group of professionals would typically cost thousands. But it is FREE to the student(s) with the most compelling business concept.

If you are a student (or team of students) from any area college or university, and want to throw your hat into the ring, submit your business concept by EOD Friday, April 18, 2008.

Audacious Keynote: Serial Entrepreneur Allan Kaplan

April 14, 2008 by audaciousventures

The Audacious Ventures conference, already packed with great speakers, is proud to announce that successful serial entrepreneur Allan Kaplan will be our featured Keynote Speaker at the conference. Allan is a local Arizona success story having founded three very successful technology firms.

Allan was co-founded Primenet Services for the Internet, Inc., which later merged with and changed its name to GlobalCenter, Inc, whose investors included Sequoia Capital, Hummer Winblad, Softbank Capital, and Global Village. He served GlobalCenter as Senior Vice President of Operations and served on its Board of Directors along with Mike Moritz of Sequoia Capital and John Hummer of Hummer Winbad. GlobalCenter successfully managed the acquisition and integration of two additional companies: Voyager Networks and ISI Systems to later become a leader in web hosting. In 1998, GlobalCenter was purchased by Frontier Communications (NYSE: FRO) for $180 million and Allan was named Senior Vice President of Connectivity Services. Global Center was later sold to Exodus Communication for over $6 Billion dollars.

Shortly after the sale of GlobalCenter, Allan co-founded Cocoon Capital, a private incubator and venture fund, through which he successfully launched:

  • Entera, Inc., an Internet infrastructure company venture backed by ComVentures, Crescendo Ventures, and Spectrum Technology. Entera was sold to Cacheflow, Inc. (COMPX: CFLO) in Q4 2000 for $440 million dollars.
  • Aerocast, a secure streaming media services company, which received $30 million in funding from Motorola Ventures, Liberty Media and Soros Fund Management.
  • Limelight Networks (NASDAQ: LLNW), currently one of the nation’s leading digital content distribution networks, for which Allan is co-founder and previously served as Chairman of the Board.

Allan has accumulated a great deal of experience through his various company-building endeavors. A young man still, we are excited to see what Allan has in store next… and are eager to hear from him at our conference on April 26th.
